How Much Does It Really Cost To Chain Up

As an industry we have accepted winter driving as an inconvenience but have we truly added up what it costs to drive during the winter months.  On this page are some examples that show what it really costs when winter driving conditions are not the most convenient and how much it is really costing your company.

To the right is an example of revenue with 1 truck.  (Average out fleet size times number of chain-ups for larger fleets)  The payload is $1.45 per mile including any fuel surcharges.  Average times chaining up per day is 3 times.  The example shows that it is cutting the chain up time in half although the time is much faster than that but in the example we are averaging 1 hour to chain up without the tool and ½ hour with the tool.  We have also added an example of what it costs to simply not chain up and park the truck at a truckstop instead of driving through the storm.  That truck was able to drive 200 miles that day before parking because of the storm.  For the truck that did chain up the average speed was 40 mph with and without chains.  The next page shows the fuel cost to idle during the chain up process.

As you can see, one winter storm where chains were needed would pay for “the Trucker’s Chain-Up Tool” with money left over.  Is this tool an expense or an investment?  How much money is your company losing by not utilizing all of the tools available to make winter driving as safe as possible.
